Young people in Charlotte are growing up with more distractions and pressures than ever. Social media often replaces real connections, while families struggle to find safe spaces and the mental health support their kids need. In fact, nearly one in five adolescents in North Carolina lives with depression, and one in ten high school students has attempted suicide. Families cannot wait weeks or months for help, the need is urgent, and it is personal for me. Having lost my oldest son to suicide, I know what is at stake when systems fail.
Mental Health Funding and Accessibility
Charlotte must expand funding for counseling, crisis intervention, and school-based support. No parent should face endless waitlists when their child needs help. We are beginning to break down the stigma around mental health, but too many families still struggle in silence. We need more counselors in schools and neighborhoods, and better outreach so families feel equipped to talk with their kids and recognize the signs of struggle before it is too late.
Youth Centers and After-School Programs
Safe, positive outlets matter. Sports, arts, STEM, and mentorship programs give kids healthy alternatives to the streets and endless screen time. Studies show structured activities lower dropout and delinquency rates, but beyond the numbers, they give kids purpose and belonging. Every child in Charlotte deserves access to these opportunities, no matter their zip code.

Outreach and Partnerships
Families often do not know where to turn. That is why outreach is critical, workshops, schools, churches, and nonprofits can all help spread the word. By partnering with trusted community organizations and breaking down barriers, we can connect families to the help they need faster.
Why This Matters
When kids feel supported, they thrive in school, build healthy relationships, and contribute to stronger neighborhoods. When they do not, the consequences ripple across the whole city. Investing in youth programs and mental health services is not a luxury, it is the foundation for a safer, stronger Charlotte.
Charlotte is at a crossroads. We can look the other way, or we can act now to invest in our future. For me, this fight is personal, and for our city, it is essential. Together, we can make sure every child has the chance not just to survive, but to thrive.

Let's Make a Difference in Our Community
By choosing to support youth centers, after-school programs, and better mental health services, we have a real chance to make a positive change in Charlotte. These efforts can help raise a generation that's creative, resilient, and healthy.
As members and leaders of this community, our voices really matter. Together, we can push for policies that put our young people first, making sure they get the resources and support they need to thrive. Now's the time to step up; let's invest in our future, tap into the amazing potential of our youth, and build a vibrant, connected community.
