Housing, Accountability & Community Resources

The Problem:
Too many residents in Charlotte are struggling to find stable housing or access community resources. So many hardworking families still can’t afford a safe place to live. The cost of rent and mortgages has grown way faster than wages, and families are being shoved out of their own neighborhoods. City-funded programs and non-profit organizations, offer solutions, yet people are still on the streets. There’s little transparency, little to no follow-through, and leaders fail to hold organizations accountable.
Will’s Plan:
Require that 20% of all new housing developments include affordable units, not just in select neighborhoods, but across all seven districts. That way, affordable housing is spread fairly throughout Charlotte instead of crowded in only a few areas.
Full Accountability for Housing Programs – If an organization gets funding to house people, there must be proof of impact. No more broken promises.
Expand Transitional & Affordable Housing – Invest in real long-term housing solutions, not just temporary shelters.
Make Resources Accessible & Follow Through – Many people don’t even know what help is available. Will can ensure information is clear, outreach is proactive, and assistance is accessible.
Push for tiny home villages and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), small backyard cottages or garage apartments as fast, flexible, and affordable solutions that can help seniors, young people, and families right now.
Repurpose unused or abandoned properties, like old motels, into livable homes families can actually afford.
Use the city’s housing dollars (often called the “Housing Trust Fund”) in plain terms: money set aside to help build or renovate affordable homes. Will believes this money should go where it makes the biggest difference, supporting projects close to schools, jobs, and transit.
Partner with churches, nonprofits, and community groups who already have land and are ready to help build affordable homes and make sure the city clears the red tape so they can get it done.
Raise the Bar for Charlotte, because this is a thriving city that deserves proper investment. Affordable housing isn’t a luxury, it’s the foundation for safe neighborhoods, stronger families, and real opportunity. And when Affordable Housing is spread across every district, it creates fairness, equal access, and makes Charlotte stronger from the ground up.
